Show Notes

I’m so excited for you to listen in on my conversation with Jen Emswiler! We hit on so many amazing topics that I think you’re really going to vibe with.

First things first, Jen Emswiler is an entrepreneur, podcast host, writer, yoga and meditation teacher, life coach and mindfulness expert dedicated to helping individuals navigate change and live life mindfully. She is the Founder and CEO of Thought Leader, which aims to bring mindfulness to teams through short, simple and powerful techniques.

Jen offers 1:1 mindful coaching sessions and consultations through her website. You can connect with Jen on social @fromjentozen or by tuning into her podcast From Jen To Zen!

Jen talks to us about how she was in a severe car accident, on birth control & got Lyme's disease which left her in chronic pain- mindfulness & meditation helped guide her through that.

TOPICS WE CHAT ABOUT:

  • Meditation is a vehicle to mindfulness.
  • Mindfulness is awareness of the present moment. The here and now.
  • Everything is temporary
  • Mindfulness- research has shown- the fight or flight part of your brain shrinks & - the part responsible for making decision, concentration & focus thickens- when we practice mindfulness we are decreasing our stress response but increasing our ability to handle more stressful situations more skillfully & take more time to respond rather than react.
  • Mindfulness/meditation allows our brain to change.
  • Not a one size fits all- find what works for you. Walking meditation, morning,  night, after a workout
  • John Kabat—Zinn Mindfulness based stress reduction clinic in Massachusetts
  • Study: Basketball athletes were split into 2 groups. One athlete was shooting free throws for several weeks. The other athlete didn’t practice. He sat and visualized him successfully doing it. At the end of the study, when the athlete who visualized the free throws actually played he was more successful and had a different perspective (even when he missed) than the player that was physically practicing for weeks.
  • Mindfulness calms your nervous system, lowering cortisol levels which is so important for hormone balance.
  • Your mind, body & hormones are all connected- you will not be able to fully heal if you are only focussed on food and exercise.
